Time in business: 10 years

Mike Tarasyuk grew up in the upholstery business working with his family honing his craft in Pennsylvania.

As an adult, Tarasyuk continued his chosen career path and ultimately moved to Cape Coral. Here, he began working for Custom Workroom, a long time Cape Coral upholstery business. As good fortune would have it, Tarasyuk was given the opportunity to purchase the business in 2006.

The first step of the new venture was changing the name of the business to Cape Upholstery to better reflect the community Tarasyuk had become a part of not only as a resident, but now as a business owner. The second step was getting his wife Leslie involved.

Over the past ten years, the couple have taken the business to a whole different level, broadening both their client base and exposure.

The couple also recently moved the business just a short distance west on Cape Coral Parkway to allow even greater expansion of their work.

We sat down with Leslie to explain to our readers what has made Cape Upholstery so successful and what their plans are for the business in the future.

Can you describe your business?

Cape Upholstery is not your typical upholstery shop. We boast a creative approach with a unique, natural eye for coordinating fabrics to customize your home.

In addition to renovating your home furnishings, we are also experts at for your boating upholstery needs as well.

Cape Upholstery has a long history in Cape Coral. Started 40 years ago as Custom Workroom, our shop has engrained itself in the community with top quality work by land and sea.

Our work speaks for itself as we have been able to sustain the ups and down of the economy by not only having a high number of repeat customers, but building our client base through a great deal of word of mouth referrals.

What makes Cape Upholstery unique?

Probably our most unique feature is the fact we have a patent on a product line called The Lelly.

The Lelly allows us to upholster chairs using our clients’ favorite sports teams including the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball. From Parsons Chairs to office chairs, we have the ability to turn your home or office into any sports fan’s dream.

In addition to The Lelly, we have the ability to embroider any design to personalize your furniture whether its home, office, or boat.

How did you get into the business?

Mike has been involved in the upholstery business since he was a child growing up in Pennsylvania.

Mike moved to Cape Coral about 15 years ago and brought his talents with him. He put those talents to good use working with Ethel, the original owner of the upholstery shop.

When the opportunity arose, Mike was able to purchase the upholstery shop and continue the quality work he started with Ethel.

In 2006, Mike and I were married, and I began working with him. I always had a natural artistic eye that can visualize how everything would look when the project was complete. I was able to utilize this talent working with Mike by going to a house and seeing what can coordinate together to bring out the most vibrant beauty a home can portray.

What has been your biggest success?

From a professional standpoint, our biggest success has been the name recognition and reputation we have built, not only in Cape Coral, but the entire Southwest Florida area. We have seen the boundaries of our work continue to expand since taking over the business a decade ago.

That recognition reached a pinnacle when we were invited to participate in the national television show “Extreme Makeover Home Edition”. That provided us a whole different level of exposure that we worked very hard to attain.

From a personal perspective, I would have to say our biggest success comes from the overwhelming joy and satisfaction we each receive when people are happy with the job we have done. It is hearing from our clients that the furniture we have upholstered has become a centerpiece of conversation for our clients and their guests.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Fortunately, we haven’t really had a “biggest challenge” that stands out.

We have been able to set goals, create opportunities and accomplish anything that we have put our mind and talents to. That is something we are very proud of and will continue as we move into the future.

What are your future plans for Cape Upholstery?

After being in business for ten years, we are beginning to look at a possible expansion. We have talked about adding a second location in Matlacha to make ourselves even more accessible to our growing client base.
